Percentage Calculator

Calculate X% of Y, find what % X is of Y, or compute the % change between two numbers. The three percentage questions that come up most often.

%

The three percentage questions that come up most often: what is X% of Y, what percent of Y is X, and what is the percent change from one value to another. Switch between modes — the inputs and result update accordingly.

For percentage change, a positive result is an increase and a negative result is a decrease.

How to use

  1. Pick the mode: X% of Y, X is what % of Y, or % change from X to Y.
  2. Enter the two values into the labelled inputs.
  3. The result is shown immediately along with a description of what's being calculated.

Frequently asked questions

How is percentage change calculated?
Percentage change = (new − original) / |original| × 100. A positive result means an increase; negative means a decrease. Using the absolute value of the original keeps the sign meaningful when going from a negative number to a positive one.
What's the difference between percentage and percentage points?
Percentage is a ratio (e.g. tax went from 5% to 7% — a 40% increase in the rate). Percentage points is a subtraction (e.g. tax went from 5% to 7% — an increase of 2 percentage points). This calculator computes percentage change, not points.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Yes. The calculator handles negatives correctly in all three modes, including for percent change where the "original" value can be negative.
