Frequently asked questions
- Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
- In the United States the cultural norm is to tip on the pre-tax bill, though many people tip on the post-tax total because it's easier. This calculator treats the bill amount as the base — enter whichever number you want to tip on.
- What's a normal tip percentage?
- In the United States, 18–20% at restaurants is standard, 15% is the floor, and 25%+ is generous. Outside the US, tipping norms vary widely — some countries don't tip at all, others include service automatically. Check local custom.
- How does the bill split work?
- Once you set party size above 1, the per-person card shows the share each person owes (their portion of the bill plus their portion of the tip).
